Malkmus certainly remains on his own languid trip, but as Real Emotional Trash proves, his music has grown far too cerebral for him to be called a slacker anymore.

Pavement's 20th anniversary is next year, but until then you'll have to tide yourself the way you have been for the entire decade: with another Malkmus/Jicks full-length. We say that like it's a bad thing. Joanna Bolme, Mike Clark and ex-Sleater-Kinney timekeeper Janet Weiss are proving increasingly adept at forging a separate identity for the Jicks. And that's gotta be a relief, because you know they're probably sick of hearing all those Pavement requests.
