Based on the play by Herb Gardner, this sensitive comedy concerns unconventional-and unemployed-ex-TV writer Murray Burns (Jason Robards, Jr.), who makes the most of his escape from the rat race in New York by enjoying his time with his nephew, Nick (Barry Gordon). When two social workers show up to investigate the boy's living conditions, Murray has to turn on the charm-and get a job-in order to adopt Nick.
