Vintage thriller concerns Stanislaus Pilgrin (Maximilian Schell), a Polish chess master whose Jewish physician wife Michele Wolf (Ingrid Thulin) is taken away to a German concentration camp towards the end of World War II. After the fighting stops, Pilgrin marries his former spouse's stepdaughter, Fabi (Samantha Eggar).
