The Saint Of Lost Causes is the 8th album from American roots troubadour, Justin Townes Earle. Earle’s latest album finds a songwriter and artist who is unflinching and unequivocal in his truth. When writing this album, Earle focused on a different America—the disenfranchised and the downtrodden, the oppressed and the oppressors, the hopeful and the hopeless. There’s the drugstore-cowboy-turned-cop-killer praying for forgiveness (“Appalachian Nightmare”) and the common Michiganders persevering through economic and industrial devastation (“Flint City Shake It”); the stuck mother dreaming of a better life on the right side of the California tracks (“Over Alameda”) and the Cuban man in New York City weighed down by a world of regret (“Ahi Esta Mi Nina”); the “used up” soul desperate to get to New Orleans (“Ain’t Got No Money”) and the “sons of bitches” in West Virginia poisoning the land and sea (“Don’t Drink the Water”). These are individuals and communities in every corner of the country, struggling through the ordinary—and sometimes extraordinary—circumstances of everyday life.
It was on a mountainside in Cumbria that the first whispers of Cate Le Bon’s fifth studio album poked their buds above the earth. “There’s a strange romanticism to going a little bit crazy and playing the piano to yourself and singing into the night,” she says, recounting the year living solitarily in the Lake District which gave way to Reward. By day, ever the polymath, Le Bon painstakingly learnt to make solid wood tables, stools and chairs from scratch; by night she looked to a second-hand Meers — the first piano she had ever owned — for company, “windows closed to absolutely everyone”, and accidentally poured her heart out. The result is an album every bit as stylistically varied, surrealistically-inclined and tactile as those in the enduring outsider’s back catalogue, but one that is also intensely introspective and profound; her most personal to date.

New Songs For Old Problems comes hot on the heels of what was a massive 2018 for Middle Kids, including the May release of their critically acclaimed album Lost Friends - an impressive debut which saw the band tour worldwide, earned them a slew of US late night TV appearances, and back home in Australia snagged an ARIA nomination, and the Triple J Album of the Year prize. The EP, recorded at Middle Kids‘ own studio in Sydney and produced by guitarist Tim Fitz, is about the colorful clash of pressures you experience when you are growing up, coming of age. An acknowledgement that life can be hard, but solace that we’re all in this together. “You look around and realize everyone is fighting the same internal battle, everyone is just acting out their story and praying it won’t end up a tragedy”, adds Fitz. Lead single “Real Thing”, a soaring rock song mixed by the legendary Mike “Spike” Stent (Madonna, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Coldplay, Muse) ruminates on the lifelong quest for meaning. The quiet, persistent voice constantly checking to see if you have truly found the thing you’re looking for. The band will tour North America alongside Local Natives in support of the release, with plans for further headline touring in the fall.

Italian grandmasters of orchestral death metal Fleshgod Apocalypse are finding spontaneity rewarding on new album, Veleno. Over the past four albums – previous album, King (2016), floored fans and critics alike – the Francesco Paoli-led trio have planned every step, discussed every note, and ensured every salutation to Paganini, Bach, and Mozart was met with an equally brutal death metal equivalent. On Veleno, which is Italian for ‘venom,’ Fleshgod Apocalypse distanced themselves from distraction, unboxed the songwriting process, and let the inspiration flow freely. On Veleno, they’ve matured, blended more efficiently their musical vision, and walked away with 11 songs that sound like a new band with an insatiable prey drive.
With their latest album 'Full Upon Her Burning Lips', Earth have stripped away the layers and auxiliary instrumentation that embellished some of their previous records and have deconstructed their dynamic to the core duo of Dylan Carlson on guitar and bass and Adrienne Davies on drums and percussion. The ten tracks on 'Full Upon Her Burning Lips' came together in bits and pieces. Some songs stemmed from a handful of musical phrases and repeating patterns concocted in moments of downtime during their 2017 tour schedule, while others came from rehearsals in the months leading up to recording or in moments of divine inspiration in the studio. The record was engineered, mixed, and mastered by longtime associate Mell Dettmer at Studio Soli. Knowing their process and their sound, Dettmer helped harness, shape, and document the songs in a manner that highlights the depth of Earths sparse components, capturing a hidden dimension to the patterns and creating a kaleidoscope of auditory activity.
Formed in Lansing, Michigan in 2009 with the concept of bringing positivity to their listeners, Of Virtue came out strong with their 2009 EP ‘To Breathe Again’, followed in 2012 with ‘Learn/Love’. In 2015 Of Virtue added more power to their sound via the release ‘Salvation’, an album which has grown to be a staple for the band's sound. Later in 2017 the band released a stand-alone single, “Ghost Town,” and followed with their breakthrough singles "Surrounded" and "Torn Apart". Sharptone Records is excited to release the band’s next full length “What Defines You” in 2019!
L'Eclair's Sauropoda LP was recorded in an undisclosed location in the mountains over the course of two days in October 2018. The music is freer than everit was captured live in the studio, there are very few overdubs, and it's mega-organic. Think of it as a 2am Youtube rabbit-hole find, or that weird-looking soviet prog funk private press that you knew you should've bought the one time you came across it in the bins. In fact, it actually sounds more like a L'Eclair live show...blended with carefully-crafted dance floor grooves, last-minute studio fantasies, and fully-faded late night jams. L'Eclair is all about the blending of things, and those things never sound the same twice; endlessly morphing like the human machine itself. Sauropoda is the way L'Eclair sounds right now in proto-groove's golden age. But don't let your head get in the way and try too hard to classify this music. Instead focus on the the way Sauropoda makes you f.e.e.l. and take your time and make it last.
A few years have passed since their last album for DAIS, but Los Angeles-based Cold Showers steadily returns to the label's roster with their third album, Motionless, wielding a more developed pop sound that is familiar to followers, yet more sophisticated and evolved than their previous works. Having traversed the realm of synth-laced post punk expertly for close to a decade, their return with the new album Motionless is a process-based album that reaches into the band's collective quiver, melding their familiar anthem infused post-punk and lush, grand pop influences. Motionless is Cold Showers looking inward and taking control of their creative process, while retaining all of their unique songwriting signatures. Recorded in their own studio in Los Angeles with band member Chris King at the production helm, each selection on Motionless sounds like a line drawing that quickly becomes a technicolor collage of crashing shoegazed reverberation. As compared to their previous endeavor, Matter of Choice, the similar additions of arpeggiated electronics and more recently, string arrangements, adds a new, more sophisticated depth to Cold Showers' already dense allegories. Tracks such as "Shine" and "Faith" stand on their own as heavy-hearted melodies that have an almost "classic" impression after only one listen. The band's cover of Sandy Rogers' 80's ballad "Black Sidewalk" (only available on the LP & CD) offers proof-of- concept, never fully comfortable with their formula and challenging themselves as to what defines an amazing song. "Measured Man" and "Dismiss" have Cold Showers orbiting in the palpitations of early Factory Records and present each spin with tactical layering, rather than flooding the board. With an overarching narrative of quiet control, Motionless allows Cold Showers to highlight their writing strengths with liquid ideation. No matter what situation the band finds themselves in, every song is given an individualized treatment while building a larger story.
Over the last decade Steve Marino has recorded multiple solo albums (as Moor Hound), been in countless bands, and toured the country consistently, but his newest full-length, 'Fluff', is the first collection of songs he's released in his own name. In that sense it's his "debut" album. One might expect such a transition, from the artifice of a band name to the intimacy of one's given name, to be born of some newfound, inward focus. It makes sense; it's a story of an artist going back to basics, getting real. It's also not what happened. 'Fluff' is an album about home, and one's place in it, love, and intimacy, and it's the result of Steve marrying his direct, honest songwriting with a deeply collaborative process. He developed the record with fellow Bloomington, Indiana resident, and standout producer/engineer Ben Lumsdaine (Kevin Krauter, Major Murphy, Spissy) and together they open up the songs, giving them tangible depth. The title track, "Fluff", with it's precise drums, layered guitars, and visceral, emotive vocals, captures the power of this collaboration. It's a song that is delicate, yet driving, lyrically opaque, yet emotionally direct. It is, like the rest of the album, in perfect balance.
