New Release Round-Up 08-28-15

New Releases - Friday 28 August 2015

BEACH HOUSE - Depression Cherry - Sub Pop
Beach House is Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally. They have been a band for over a decade, living and working in Baltimore, MD. Depression Cherry is their 5th full-length record. This record follows the release of their self-titled album in 2006, Devotion in 2008, Teen Dream in 2010 and Bloom in 2012. Depression Cherry was recorded at Studio in the Country in Bogalusa, Louisiana from November ’14 through January ’15. This time period crossed the anniversaries of both John Lennon’s and Roy Orbison’s death. In general, this record shows a return to simplicity, with songs structured around a melody and a few instruments, with live drums playing a far lesser role.

YO LA TENGO - Stuff Like That There - Matador Records
Rare is the band that can cover themselves. Rarer is the band that would even think of it and rarer still is a band that would return to the conception and re-imagine its first breakthrough record. Someone may have read recently that old quote about how “in not knowing history one is doomed to repeat it.” There’s not another band that I know that is less doomed than Yo La Tengo. As stated previously, the album features covers from bands other than themselves: The Cure, Hank Williams, The Lovin’ Spoonful and more. Stuff Like That There, a 14 song collection of covers, originals and reworking(s) happens to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the Yo La Tengo’s landmark 1990 album, Fakebook.

FOALS - What Went Down - Warner Bros
All of the truly transformative and era-defining albums have grappled with questions that are a world away from the bland bleatings of homogenized pop. Permanence and impermanence, life and death, solitude, vulnerability, intimacy, passion, rage, humanity - weighty issues that make demands of the people creating that music, and of all those who listen to it, too. What Went Down confronts these issues head-on.

THE PAPER KITES - Twelvefour

THE PAPER KITES - TwelvefourTHE PAPER KITES - Twelvefour - Nettwerk RecordsTHE PAPER KITES - Twelvefour
Australian indie-folk outfit The Paper Kites release their sophomore album, Twelvefour on Nettwerk Records. Produced by Phil Ek (Father John Misty, Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses), it is the follow up to the band’s debut album States. Written entirely between midnight and four in the morning, twelvefour is a concept record that explores the theory that an artist’s creative peak lays within these hours. The Paper Kites’ music has been featured on numerous television shows including ABC’s Forever and Grey’s Anatomy, as well as The CW’s Reign.

Most importantly, their fifth full-length album, Dark Night Sweet Light debuted at #1 on Australia’s ARIA album chart. Dark Night Sweet Light is a proper introduction to a worldwide audience.

Motorhead - Bad Magic Motorhead - Bad Magic
New CD: $17.98   $16.98
Bristling with thunderous attitude, and some of the fiercest rhythms and riffs that’ll assault your ears this year, Bad Magic demands that you fall to your knees and pray heartily that your senses don’t get completely pulverized, because big-rig head crushers like the totemic and Motöranthemic “Thunder And Lightning” show that Motörhead are as strong, mean, loud, relentless, uncompromising and goddam heavy as ever.
Andra Day - Cheers To The Fall Andra Day - Cheers To The Fall

New CD: $15.98
Defeater - Abandoned Defeater - Abandoned
New CD: $15.98
Boston’s most devoted and steadfast hardcore band, Defeater knows what it takes to remain credible in a scene where fans demand both unapologetic, in-your-face power and intense emotional honesty. For Defeater and their die-hard fans, this honesty is key, and with their Epitaph debut Abandoned, Derek Archambault (vocals) and fellow band members have created their masterpiece.
Ahab - The Boats Of The Glen Carrig Ahab - The Boats Of The Glen Carrig
New CD: $16.98
German nautic doomers Ahab have not only created their very own subgenre, they are also incomparable dabblers in solemn melancholy! The Boats of the Glen Carrig is a novel by William Hope Hodgson from 1907 that tells the gruesome story of survival after shipwreck: the ice-cold embrace of the sea this as always has been turned to molten lead in the utmost atmospheric manner by Ahab! Since the band's founding in late 2004, the four-piece has continuously worked its way to the top of (funeral) doom. The Boats of the Glen Carrig is their magnum opus and is gracefully nestled in between slow-motion anthems and haunting melodies.
I See Stars - Phases I See Stars - Phases
New CD: $11.98
New acoustic release from I See Stars, highlighting some of their greatest hits like they've never been heard before.
