New Release Round-Up 03-03-15

New Releases - Tues. 03 Mar

BRANDI CARLILE - THE FIREWATCHER'S DAUGHTER - ATO Records
Brandi Carlile
's fifth studio album, The Firewatcher's Daughter, is her first album on ATO Records. It is the follow-up to Bear Creek, which debuted in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 album chart in 2012. The 12-song album explodes with energy, urgency and pristine harmonies and represents the start of a fresh chapter for Carlile and her longtime collaborators Tim and Phil Hanseroth, also known as “The Twins.” The Firewatcher’s Daughter was recorded almost entirely as first takes without any demoing and little rehearsal before gathering at Bear Creek Studio in Washington State.

OF MONTREAL - AUREATE GLOOM - Polyvinyl Records
“A golden despondency” is how Kevin Barnes translates the meaning behind Aureate Gloom, the title he gave Of Montreal’s thirteenth full-length album. The oxymoron is one Barnes says best describes the overall state of his life and mental outlook while working on the record — penning lyrics so personal they sound like entries ripped from a journal that should be permanently kept under lock and key.

NOEL GALLAGHER'S HIGH FLYING BIRDS - CHASING YESTERDAY - Sour Mash
On his new album, Noel settles into solo life with brutish thrills, buoyant melodies and swampy psych rock. The second full-length solo release was self-produced by the former Oasis singer/guitarist and features a guest appearance from Johnny Marr.

STEVEN WILSON - HAND. CANNOT. ERASE - Kscope
The fourth solo album from prolific songwriter, four-time Grammy-nominated artist, multi-instrumentalist and producer, Steven Wilson. Hand. Cannot Erase. is a dynamic 11-song conceptual set, bringing together diverse aspects of his expansive sonic history. Recorded in September 2014 at AIR Studios London, Hand. Cannot. Erase. features the guitar-driven power, infectious melodies, and progressive sensibility of Wilson s sprawling body of work.

TUXEDO - TUXEDO - Stones Throw
Tuxedo
is the Grammy nominated duo of Mayer Hawthorne & Jake One, combining their powers for an epic album of boogie funk, a true descendant of the one-word moniker family of funk, where you will find groups such as Chic, Shalamar, Plush & Zapp!

YOUNG BUFFALO - HOUSE - Votiv
Power pop is an infamously tricky genre to master, and music is littered with bands who were either too slick or too cornball to really conjure up golden harmonies worthy of Weezer, Teenage Fanclub or Cheap Trick.  Praise be, then, for Mississippi five-piece Young Buffalo, whose debut album House stands tall next to those forefathers.  Genre classifications aside, the supremely infectious House is simply one of the first great albums of 2015 in any field.

Jose Gonzalez - Vestiges & Claws Jose Gonzalez - Vestiges & Claws
New CD: $14.98
Brand new, long awaited album from José González, Vestiges & Claws. This will be the first album in 7 years for José González- his sophomore album, In Our Nature, which was released in 2007 was met with much critical acclaim. Since then, José González recorded and released albums with his other musical incarnation, Junip a duo made up of González and Tobias Winterkorn. Most recently, González teamed up with Ryan Adams to create a track for Ben Stiller's "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty" released last year.
Steve Earle & The Dukes - Terraplane Steve Earle & The Dukes - Terraplane
New CD: $15.98
Terraplane takes its title from the 1930s Hudson Motor Car Company of Detroit model, which also inspired the Robert Johnson song “Terraplane Blues.” It is Earle’s 16th studio album since the release of his highly influential 1986 debut Guitar Town. As its title suggests, the album is very much a blues record, a third of which was written while Earle toured Europe alone for five weeks with just a guitar, a mandolin and a backpack. Earle, who was raised outside of San Antonio before migrating to Houston, offers about Texas blues, “There was Fort Worth where the model was Freddie King, and there was the Houston scene which was dominated by Lightnin’ Hopkins. Two very different styles.” He saw both of these giants, and was also exposed to Johnny Winter, Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Billy Gibbons, all of which make their influence heard here within Earle’s masterful storytelling.
Texas - Texas 25 Texas - Texas 25

Glen Campbell - Glen Campbell I'll Be Me [Soundtrack] Glen Campbell - Glen Campbell I'll Be Me [Soundtrack]
New CD: $10.99
Honored in 2012 with the GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award, Country Music Hall of Fame member Glen Campbell has recorded his last song. I m Not Gonna Miss You was written by Campbell and Julian Raymond specifically for a new documentary titled GLEN CAMPBELL: I LL BE ME. Produced by Raymond, the song was recorded in the Los Angeles-based Sunset Sound Factory and East West Recording Studios.
Mourn - Mourn Mourn - Mourn
New CD: $14.98
MOURN is a very young quartet formed from the friendship of Jazz Rodríguez Bueno and Carla Pérez Vas - both born in 1996 in El Maresme, Catalonia, Spain. The duo armed themselves with inspiration from PJ Harvey, Patti Smith, Sebadoh and Sleater Kinney and began writing material, which they quickly released, raw and acoustic, on their YouTube channel. These recordings caught the attention of their homeland's Sones Records. Despite being teenagers, earlier this year they came out of the studio (along with drummer Antonio Postius and bassist Leia Rodríguez) with a brilliant treatise of indie rock that has stunned those who have had the opportunity to listen to it.
Ibeyi - Ibeyi Ibeyi - Ibeyi
New CD: $14.98   $12.99
Ibeyi (pronounced ee-bey-ee) means “twins” in the language of the Yoruban cul¬ture of Lisa-Kainde and Naomi Diaz. The album of the same name, produced by XL Recordings boss Richard Russell, is the story of two sisters: their relation¬ship, their origins, their shared history and their musical chemistry. The twins’ roots are reflected in the polyglot nature of the lyrics — in English, French and Yoruban — and music which combines ritual chants with synths and samplers, jazz vocals with the spellbinding mystery of Björk and Fever Ray, the traditional with the modern. This uniquely cosmopolitan sound is the perfect vehicle for their intimately personal stories. According to them, “This album is about love and family and people who are gone.”
Roebuck Pops Staples - Don't Lose This Roebuck Pops Staples - Don't Lose This
New CD: $15.98
Before his death in 2000, Roebuck “Pops” Staples gave the world nearly five decades’ worth of gospel and soul, both on his own and as the leader of the Staples Singers, the family singing group he put together with his kids. In 1999, Pops got to work on his final album, but he never had the chance to finish it. But now, Mavis Staples’, Pops’ legendary daughter, has finished that album, now called Don’t Lose This, and she’s called in help. Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy, who produced Mavis’ last two albums, serves as co-producer with Mavis. Tweedy plays bass on the album, and his son Spencer plays drums.
Fifty Shades Of Grey - Fifty Shades Of Grey [Score] Fifty Shades Of Grey - Fifty Shades Of Grey [Score]

Danny Elfman's fantastic score to one of this years hottest movies
Kate Pierson - Guitars & Microphones Kate Pierson - Guitars & Microphones

New CD: $12.98
The historic concert from 1997
Jorma Kaukonen - Ain't In No Hurry Jorma Kaukonen - Ain't In No Hurry
New CD: $17.98   $16.98
Ain't in No Hurry, Jorma Kaukonen's third solo record on Red House Records is a knock out collection of songs that show Jorma remains at the top of his game. Ain't in No Hurry is a blend of American roots, blues, rockers and Jorma originals including a lost Woody Guthrie lyric that Jorma and producer Larry Campbell put to music. Each song frames Jorma's life and development as an artist and where he is at today. With a cast of musicians that includes longtime Hot Tuna partner, Jack Casady, Barry Mitterhoff, Larry Campbell, Teresa Williams, and the rhythm section of Myron Hart and Justin Guip, Ain't in No Hurry is an instant classic.
Tropics - Rapture Tropics - Rapture
New CD: $12.98
The new album from Tropics, aka 27 year old Chris Ward, looks outwards, armed with a newfound confidence that foregrounds his vocal performance and songwriting. It’s a musical progression that mirrors a personal one: the early Tropics output was all made in the idyllic, if isolated setting of Ward’s grandmother’s empty house in the seaside town of Southsea, which he moved into after graduating from university to focus on writing and recording. He was alone there - “like, really alone. For days, I had literally no distractions.”
Art Pepper - Neon Art: Volume One Art Pepper - Neon Art: Volume One
New CD: $16.98
First CD/Digital release of the 2012 unissued material, previously only available on vinyl.
A Place To Bury Strangers - Transfixiation A Place To Bury Strangers - Transfixiation
New CD: $14.98
Rather than fixate on the minute details like they may have done in the past, the group, rounded out by drummer Robi Gonzalez, trust their instincts and try to keep things as pure as possible. Music is much more exhilarating when it's unpredictable even on repeat plays, and this is very much an unpredictable record. Gonzalez makes his recording debut with the band here, and it’s obvious that he’s helped pushed the band’s recordings closer to the level of their infamous live shows.

New CD: $24.98   $21.99
Certified 16x platinum in the U.S., the commercial success of Physical Graffiti was equaled by its critical reception. Generally regarded as one of the greatest double albums of all time, the original 15 tracks represent a creative tour de force that explores the band’s dynamic musical range, from the driving rock of “Custard Pie” and acoustic arrangement of “Bron-Y-Aur Stomp” to the Eastern raga of “Kashmir” and funky groove of “Trampled Under Foot.” Deluxe 3 CD package with the original artwork, plus the newly created negative artwork for the companion audio. The original album is newly remastered on 2 CDs; the 3rd CD features previously unreleased studio outtakes. Die-cut square Slipcase to hold 3 wallets, booklet and U-card. 16 page booklet.
Devo - Hardcore Live! Devo - Hardcore Live!
New CD: $14.99
Video
Devo captured live in Oakland, performing early experimental tracks. No matter how messy, beginnings are exciting. Especially when what happens next endures the test of time. For Devo the beginning happened in the basements and garages of Akron, Ohio. The songs they wrote were raw and unfiltered with no commercial intent. They called it Hardcore Devo. Performing 21 oddities, intercut with poignant stories told by Mark, Jerry and Bob 1, this program is a tribute to the departed Bob ""Bob 2"" Casale.
Kid Rock - First Kiss Kid Rock - First Kiss
New CD: $18.98   $14.99
Following the success of 2012’s “Rebel Soul” and the accompanying “$20 Best Night Ever Tour,” Kid Rock wasted no time getting back to work in the studio. The massive touring on the last album cycle allowed Kid Rock to play in front of over 550,000 people in one summer, and left him energized to write and record new material without taking much of a break. “First Kiss” signals the continued evolution of one of music’s most versatile performers.
Badbadnotgood & Ghostface Killah - Sour Soul Badbadnotgood & Ghostface Killah - Sour Soul
New CD: $11.98
Sour Soul is the collaborative album from Toronto jazz/hip-hop band BADBADNOTGOOD and Staten Island rap champ Ghostface Killah. Inspired by 1960s and 70s music - taking inspiration from the recording techniques and production of that era, and eschewing sampling in favour of live instrumentation, BBNG with producer Frank Dukes have created a dramatic, cinematic musical staging for Ghostface’s vivid storytelling. Sour Soul also features guest spots from MF DOOM, Elzhi (Slum Village / J Dilla), Danny Brown and prodigal new rapper Tree (Project mayhem).
Torche - Restarter Torche - Restarter
New CD: $13.98
Free Stuff
Heavy rock titans TORCHE make their Relapse debut with the thunderous ‘Restarter’, a ten song triumph of an album. TORCHE rose to popularity merging huge infectious melodies with downtuned, crushing sludgey rock and on ‘Restarter’ they’ve perfected the marriage. This is a record that is simultaneously hum-able and heavy that will just as easily appeal to fans of Dinosaur Jr and Sonic Youth as it will Melvins and High On Fire-heads. But what truly sets TORCHE apart from their peers is their ability to use top-notch songwriting and soaring, harmonic vocals to create records that are heavier and louder and hookier than anyone else out there.
Ensiferum - One Man Army Ensiferum - One Man Army
New CD: $17.98   $16.98
Video Free Stuff

Falling In Reverse - Just Like You Falling In Reverse - Just Like You
New CD: $15.98
Just Like You (album number three if you're counting) finds Falling In frontman Ronnie Radke with no shortage of material to sing, scream and howl about. In the roughly two years since last album Fashionably Late, Radke lost a close family member (faced head-on with the tear-jerking album closing ballad, Brother), watched old friends succumb to old vices (first track Chemical Prisoner), and struggled with his lifelong search for meaning (God, If You Are Above... is as real as it gets) and personal redemption. But the playful innuendo that made hits of The Drug In Me Is You and Situations is back front and center in songs like Sexy Drug and the album s title track, with its over-the-top, hilariously brave refrain: I am aware that I am an a**hole!
Chris Brown & Tyga - Fan Of A Fan: The Album Chris Brown & Tyga - Fan Of A Fan: The Album

Emile Haynie - We Fall Emile Haynie - We Fall
New CD: $13.95

The Airborne Toxic Event - Dope Machines The Airborne Toxic Event - Dope Machines
New CD: $11.96
With the creation of Dope Machines, Jollett says it's different this time around then it's been for their other records. He spent a year locked in a room, working 12 hours a day where he wrote over 40 songs. "I wanted to change the approach of the band and change the sound of the band," Jollett said, "I knew in order to do that, I had to learn a lot of new tricks and new skills." Jollett not only wrote all of the songs on Dope Machines, he also produced the record. This was his first time producing an entire album and decided to do it after Jacquire King, the producer of Such Hot Blood, encouraged him to do so. Jollett admits that it was a lot of work but was also a tremendous amount of discovery and creative energy, and that was invigorating and exciting for him as an artist. Fans may wonder why The Airborne Toxic Event would change the way they do things, but according to Jollett, they change with every record as they continue to evolve as a band.
Screaming Females - Rose Mountain Screaming Females - Rose Mountain
New CD: $13.98
Screaming Females had such a clear goal for their new album that it became almost a mantra: they wanted songs that were concise, crisp and melodic. That's exactly what the New Jersey punk trio delivers on Rose Mountain, their sixth LP, due in February on Don Giovanni Records. The album is a milestone in a number of ways. Not only does Rose Mountain reflect a new approach to the band's songwriting, the LP marks the first time Screaming Females have worked with an outside producer (Matt Bayles), and comes as the trio celebrates 10 years together.
James McMurtry - Complicated Game James McMurtry - Complicated Game
New CD: $13.98
James McMurtry spins stories with a poet's pen ('Long Island Shores') and a painter's precision ('She Loves Me'). Proof: The acclaimed songwriter's new 'Complicated Game'. McMurtry's first collection in six years spotlights a craftsman in absolutely peak form as he turns from political toward personal ('These Things I've Come to Know, You Got to Me'). 'The lyrical theme is mostly about relationships', McMurtry says. 'It's also a little about the big old world verses the poor little farmer or fisherman. I never make a conscious decision about what to write about.'
The Pop Group - Citizen Zombie The Pop Group - Citizen Zombie
New CD: $15.98   $12.99
Post punk provocateurs The Pop Group, one of the most wildly innovative and barrier-shattering bands to emerge from the late ’70s era are set to release their first studio recording in 35 years. The album ‘Citizen Zombie’ has been produced by one of the biggest names in commercial pop music, multi Grammy and Academy Award winner Paul Epworth (Adele, U2, Florence & The Machine). The album, features original members Mark Stewart (lyrics / vocals), Gareth Sager (guitar), Dan Catsis (bass), and Bruce Smith (drums).
JJ Grey & Mofro - Ol' Glory JJ Grey & Mofro - Ol' Glory
New CD: $15.98
Onstage, Grey delivers his songs with compassion and a relentless honesty, but perhaps not until Ol’ Glory has a studio record captured the fierceness and intimacy that defines a Grey live performance. “I wanted that crucial lived-in feel,” Grey says of Ol’ Glory, and here he hits his mark. On the new album, Grey and his current Mofro lineup offer grace and groove in equal measure, with an easygoing quality to the production that makes those beautiful muscular drum-breaks sound as though the band has set up in your living room.
Eternal Death - Eternal Death Eternal Death - Eternal Death
New CD: $14.98
Icy electronic pop debut album from the mysterious Swedish artist Eternal Death, the perfect combination of Robyn and Burial!
Future Brown - Future Brown Future Brown - Future Brown
New CD: $16.98
Often dubbed a “supergroup”, each member of Future Brown is a seasoned artist across genres. Fatima Al Qadiri, a Kuwaiti musician and visual artist, last year debuted her LP Asiatisch to critical acclaim via the infamous Hyperdub. LA-based Daniel Pineda and AsmaMaroof have been producing and DJing as Nguzunguzu for the Fade To Mind crew and worked with rappers Le1f, M.I.A and R&B singer Kelela. J-Cush, runs Lit City Trax from NYC, a label providing an outlet for urban music from every corner of the globe including the late Chicago footwork legend DJ Rashad. Presenting vocal collaborators with strains of sonic ideas they would never encounter otherwise, Future Brown manage to catalyze a cosmopolitan, experimental approach to contemporary urban sounds.
Dan Deacon - Gliss Riffer Dan Deacon - Gliss Riffer
New CD: $13.98   $11.99
Gliss Riffer marks new territory for Baltimore-based Dan Deacon who, following up on the release of his large ensemble-based recordings - 2009’s Bromst and 2012’s America - has returned to a simpler way of writing and recording, similar to that of 2007’s Spiderman of the Rings, which resulted in this self-produced album. What Gliss Riffer shares with Spiderman of the Rings as a musical experience is an aesthetic directness and its ecstatic energy.
Altan - Widening Gyre Altan - Widening Gyre
New CD: $16.98
With a career at the pinnacle of Irish music for nearly 35 years Altan has achieved legendary status in a genre that has been equally shaped by the band's influence and genius. On THE WIDENING GYRE, the band explores the musical relationship between American roots music and the traditional music of Ireland. It s the first full project Altan has recorded in Nashville, and working under the guiding hand of producer and Compass co-founder Garry West, the album pairs these Irish masters with some of the leading lights of American folk and bluegrass music, many of whom the members of Altan have known for years. The resulting music is completely engaging, simultaneously breaking new ground and reminding listeners of the ancient bond between Irish and Appalachian music.
Gibson Brothers - Brotherhood Gibson Brothers - Brotherhood
New CD: $15.98
Brotherhood is both a homecoming as well as a confident and creative step forward for the Gibson Brothers. With this work, they pay homage to those who came before, through a brilliant collection of covers, originally made famous by some of the classic brother duets of the past. In a career that sees them well-established as two-time IBMA Entertainers of the Year and Song of the Year winner for one of their originals, this album is already being hailed by some as their strongest record to date. In Julie Thanki's notes, she recognizes the record as honoring the Gibsons's influences, rooted in classic country and bluegrass brother acts, while further establishing them as a vital roots music group with an even more promising future than their already distinctive past. Brotherhood gives us timeless and enjoyable music at its finest, an inspired set of songs that shows yet another side of the Gibson Brothers.

It is the follow-up to Bear Creek, which debuted in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 album chart in 2012. Of Montreal - Aureate Gloom Of Montreal - Aureate Gloom
New CD: $13.98
“A golden despondency” is how Kevin Barnes translates the meaning behind Aureate Gloom, the title he gave of Montreal’s thirteenth full-length album. The oxymoron is one Barnes says best describes the overall state of his life and mental outlook while working on the record — penning lyrics so personal they sound like entries ripped from a journal that should be permanently kept under lock and key.

Young Buffalo - House Young Buffalo - House
New CD: $9.98
Power pop is an infamously tricky genre to master, and music is littered with bands who were either too slick or too cornball to really conjure up golden harmonies worthy of Weezer, Teenage Fanclub or Cheap Trick. Praise be, then, for Mississippi five-piece Young Buffalo, whose debut album House stands tall next to those forefathers. Genre classifications aside, the supremely infectious House is simply one of the first great albums of 2015 in any field.
Kelly Clarkson - Piece By Piece Kelly Clarkson - Piece By Piece
New CD: $11.96
Piece By Piece is Clarkson's first album in over three years, although the former American Idol champ has been busy in the interim: 2012 brought a best-of compilation, Greatest Hits - Chapter One, while the following year included the release of Clarkson's first holiday album, Wrapped In Red. Clarkson also became a mom since her last official album, giving birth to River Rose last June.

The Stones - Three Blind Mice The Stones - Three Blind Mice
New CD: $15.98
2015 compilation by the under-appreciated New Zealand indie band. The Stones were birthed by singer/guitarist Wayne Elsey's decision to quit Bored Games to start a band that sounded like The Clean. Their d‚but came on the 25th April 1981 at an Otago University a gig headlined by Bored Games (Shayne Carter) and new comers The Chills and The Verlaines. Elsey's vision for a band that sounds like The Clean didn't really come to fruition. The Stones were too bright not to create their own sound one wrapped in braggadocio and swagger. Fast, aggressive guitars, driving rhythm section with a knack for fluid pop structures. Charismatic and smart The Stones had the ability to sound completely empathetic and threatening all at once. As all good things, The Stones were not to last, releasing one full length before breaking up two years in. The band were part of the wave of Dunedin bands popular around the country and mystery to the middle. The band site the $38 dollars earned opening for Tall Dwarfs a career highlight.

An epic sonic portrait, Scar Sighted continues much in the vein of 2008's Massive Conspiracy Against All Life masterpiece, while other lurkings run along the edges of the work. Lady Lamb’s debut on Brooklyn indie Ba Da Bing drew praise from Paste, Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound, and NPR’s All Things Considered. On the strength of touring with the likes of Typhoon, Beirut, Sharon Van Etten and Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, Ripley Pine sold over 9,000 copies. “After” is her Mom+Pop debut, and features the lead single Billions of Eyes”, which hints at Spaltro and the band’s evolution. “Billions of Eyes” will impact at radio in January and Lady Lamb’s 2015 will be busy with extensive touring.
Ryan Culwell - Flatlands Ryan Culwell - Flatlands
New CD: $12.98
When asked to describe his music, Ryan Culwell says, “listening to my music is like watching No Country For Old Men...all the emptiness and violence will either scare you away or you’ll find yourself alone at 3am with it on repeat.” His songs tell tales of oilfields, honky tonks, loss, fistfights, and the forgotten place that is the panhandle of Texas. On March 3rd, Ryan Culwell will release Flatlands, his first album in more than 8 years, on Lighting Rod Records (Jason Isbell, Billy Joe Shaver, Amanda Shires). Culwell was born in Perryton, TX and spent most of his life among the company of roughneck oilfield men in a small town near the epicenter of the Dust Bowl. Like many from West Texas, Culwell loves the land and he hates it, bearing all the scars of a man who believes he can find mountains in a landscape that resembles a table top. He’s not unlike Tom Joad: tough, but gentle. But tough. Like one of the album’s most powerful songs, he’s got “Piss Down In His Bones,” but don’t let that scare you away from an artist that’s certain to be one of 2015’s new voices in American music.

Ata Kak - Obaa Sima Ata Kak - Obaa Sima
New CD: $14.98
